Girls Tennis Roundup 11-8-07: Granite Hills advances to second round

MAMMOTH LAKES — The Granite Hills girls tennis team jumped out to a big advantage early in its match with Mammoth on Thursday and survived a late collapse to advance to the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division V playoffs.

The Cougars tied Mammoth 9-9 but won on games, 80-70.

Granite Hills was up 9-4 before losing the final five matches of the day.

Shilpa Puri swept her singles sets for the Cougars (14-6), dropping only four games on the day.

Granite Hills will likely face No. 3-seeded Ontario Christian in the second round. The match would be set for Saturday at Granite Hills High at 11 a.m.

SANTIAGO/CORONA 13, SULTANA 5: At Corona, the Sultans (16-5) couldn’t win a set in singles play as they were knocked out of the CIF-SS Division III playoffs in the first round.

Santiago, the No. 1 team from the Mountain View League, dropped a total of just six games in singles play.

Things were a bit brighter on the doubles side for Sultana, as the teams of Melissa Westerman-Megan Camara and Kelsie Skarbek-Brittany Graham each won two sets.

Sultana coach Jennifer Wiedeman said she was pleased with her team’s regular season and said this year’s playoff performance was an improvement over last year, when the Sultans lost 17-1 in the first round.
